Chapter 4

London

The Darcy townhouse was in a fashionable part of London, a part Elizabeth had only been to once, when she had come to town to buy wedding clothes and Mr. Darcy had hosted a dinner.

She had toured much of his home that day, but a shiver ran down her spine as she remembered what he had said to her. “There is more to the house Elizabeth, but I would have us married when I show it to you.”

Now pulling up in front of the place her excitement was rising. The day had been long, but it still held promises of much to come.

For a second time that day, Mr. Darcy handed Elizabeth down from the carriage with tousled hair. This time she had tucked it into her bonnet so no one would witness it.

Upon entering London House, they were met by Mrs. Stewart, the housekeeper. Mrs. Stewart, although a proficient housekeeper, was a stark opposite in personality of Mrs. Reynolds. Where Mrs. Reynolds was soft-spoken and quiet, Mrs. Stewart was out-spoken and boisterous. She took their coats, hats, gloves, and wraps and ushered them into the sitting room where she had hot tea ready for the travel weary couple.

“Mr. Darcy, sir, Mrs. Darcy, it is so delightful to have you home. I hope your journey was pleasant.”

“Yes, it was.” Mr. Darcy replied shortly, and Elizabeth just nodded.

“Very good, sir, I have taken the liberty and set out some tea in the evening parlour. Please follow me.” The parlour faced East and looked out on a courtyard. In the summer, Elizabeth imagined she would enjoy sitting there to read, but now it was far too cold and damp.

Fitzwilliam led Elizabeth to the parlour. Their hands were clasped, displaying the comfort they both felt in their own home. They refreshed themselves in the small room off the side, that visitors to their home commonly used. Then they sat together on the couch as Mrs. Stewart poured the tea. Once she had served, Mr. Darcy dismissed her. “Thank you Mrs. Stewart that will be all.”

As she reached the door, she turned and informed Mr. Darcy and his bride about dinner.

“I have prepared a light supper for you and the missus, sir. Do you have a preference of when you will eat.”

Before addressing her, he spoke to Elizabeth. “Elizabeth, are you hungry?”

“A little.”

“Would you like to take dinner now or in a little while?”

“I think we can finish our tea and then eat. How are you Fitzwilliam, are you hungry?”

“Yes, very. I hardly ate a morsel at the wedding brunch for there were too many well-wishers too often at my side.”

“Let us go in now then.” She turned to address Mrs. Stewart. “As you heard, Mr. Darcy is famished and about to waste away, perhaps we should eat dinner immediately.”

Mrs. Stewart smiled at her new mistress. She is a spirited lady, is she not, she thought as she left the room to ring the dinner bell. She smiled, and thanked God her master had found such a woman.
